這里“乞巧”的這個“乞”，我們可以說beg，也可以用plead這個詞，plead to be endowed with perfect sewing skills. 貌似這兩個詞都和浪漫氣氛不符哦，plead其實更常見于法庭上，律師為某人辯護，就是plead one's case;而那句我們耳熟能詳?shù)摹安徽J罪”，則是plead not guilty，反之“認罪”就是plead guilty——注意這里的用法，比較特殊哦，是在動詞plead后面直接加形容詞guilty——法官就會經(jīng)常問這句話：Do you plead guilty or not guilty?你可認罪?也有一個更常見的情況，就是被告人plead insanity，以精神失常為借口，試圖減輕刑罰。

回到七夕乞巧的風(fēng)俗吧，乞巧是為了精進自己的女紅手藝，女紅(注意啊注意啊，這里的“紅”讀音是“工”，不要讀錯了哦)也就是針線活，用英語說就是doing needlework。印象中女紅活兒就是 刺繡 (embroider)吧，不知道現(xiàn)在還有多少女孩子會刺繡活兒呢?似乎大家都更prefer簡單易學(xué)的 十字繡 (cross-stitch)了。那么，學(xué)十字繡的話，也是需要乞一下巧的吧……

至于祈求姻緣，這個恐怕還是要看緣分哦，如果兩個人是predestined to be together，那么是無論如何都會相遇并相愛的吧。在這里祝天下有情人終成眷屬吧!(All shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill!)
